Interventional Spine Care
Spinal conditions can include pain due to injury,
congenital deformities, or a degenerative
condition. Dr. Willoughby uses a wide variety of
spine treatments, including medication, therapy,
injections and radiofrequency neurotomy in
patients suffering from:
•
Neck and back strains and sprains
•
Herniated and bulging discs
•
Degenerative (worn out) discs
•
Pinched nerves in the neck and lower back
•
Sacroiliac joint pain and dysfunction
Sports Medicine
Sports medicine is the field concerned with
physical fitness and the prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment of injuries sustained in sports or
exercise-related activities. This includes, but is
not limited to, sprains, strains and other soft
tissue injuries, stress fractures, knee and ankle
injuries, shoulder impingement, tennis or “Little
Leaguer’s” elbow.
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: Diagnosis & Injections
Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test
that provides pictures of muscles, ligaments,
tendons, nerves and other soft tissues in the
joints. Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (x-
rays). The test is safe and painless and uses sound
waves to produce the images. The ultrasound
images help Dr. Willoughby diagnose and treat
various orthopedic conditions. During the test, a
gel is applied to the skin and a small hand-held device called a
transducer glides over the skin to send sound waves through the joint.
The sound waves bounce off the soft tissues and return to the
transducer and a computer translates those sound waves into an image.
Often ultrasound can be used to diagnose pain or conditions that are
difficult to diagnose with other imaging techniques or tests. It allows
for dynamic evaluation of the joints and soft tissues and an interactive
approach where the examiner can localize an area of pain in real time
and visualize the muscles and bones while the patient is moving to help
make a diagnosis that may have been otherwise missed.
Dr. Willoughby may use an ultrasound test to help diagnose and treat:
•
Tendon tears or tendinitis
•
Muscle tears
•
Masses or fluid that has
collected in joints

Physiatry & Rehabilitation
Physiatry is the branch of medicine that deals
with restoring function for a person who has
been impaired as a result of a disease, disorder,
pain or injury. Rehabilitation physicians
(Physiatrists) are nerve, muscle, and bone
experts who treat injuries or illnesses that
affect how you move. Their goal is to decrease
pain and enhance performance without surgery.
As a physiatrist, Dr. Willoughby will design a treatment plan that can
help patients stay as active as possible at any age. Dr. Willoughby
treats the whole person, not just the condition, restoring as much
function and independence as possible.
